ARCHITECTURE VIDEOS

Architecture, as a complex stage for life, is a central credo in Christian's visual work.
Temporal aspects of urbanity become inspiration and effective tool in analysing and describing buildings, cities and systems.
Early collaborations with architects started in 1999, as part of the Neutral collective.
Christian, alongside the Neutral team, collaborated with offices like Zaha Hadid Architects, Herzog & de Meuron, David Chipperfield and OMA. These videos created seminal, genre defining visual pieces exhibited widely at events, in museums, as part of competitions and political decision making processes.
These early architectural videograms often start with abstracted design concepts, blending real footage with 3D renderings. In combination with evocative soundtracks, they always use narratives to unravel for a wider audience complex architectural thought and design processes.

ESSAY FILMS

Often our habitat inadvertently defines our existence – and how we feel. Words cannot describe the range of experiences and feelings, complex interdependencies or personal reactions to architecture and urbanity.
The series of short essay films Seek tries to capture seemingly disparate environments and impressions by capturing often subjective and highly personal perspectives.
Layers of identity, culture, class, and history are being peeled back and juxtaposed. The hidden narrative becomes a guiding principle and creates opportunity for myriad interpretations.
The Seek films were created in close collaboration with fellow architect and film maker Tapio Snellman, also a founding partner of Neutral.

TRANS-DISCIPLINARY

Inspired by multilateral creative practice, Christian, together with the collective Neutral, engaged with various architecture-adjacent creators spanning fashion, contemporary dance, music and theatre.
Project collaborations with fashion designer Hussein Chalayan or contemporary dance company Sasha Waltz brought together immersiveness and spatial interactivity, coupled with technical explorations and digital craftmanship.

NEUTRAL

While finishing his architectural studies in Tokyo, Christian established Neutral with founding partner Tapio Snellman in 1998, creating seminal urban essay videos, as well as commercial projects for Toyota.
Early gallery successes like the inclusion of the essay film Seek.01 in the 'Cities on the Move' exhibition at the Hayward Gallery in London, paired with commercial success with the likes of Lufthansa, encouraged the duo to intensify their artistic, creative and commercial output.
Neutral grew as a creative collective throughout the early 2000s.
Adam Randall joined Neutral in 2012 with the creation of Neutral Digital, a new endeavour and platform to focus specifically on technologically advanced spatial interactivity and 3D immersiveness.
Neutral, as a platform, continues to develop. After more than 25 years, it still engages with the latest digital and immersive technologies.
